According to the legacy of the shepherd children of Fátima, it was Our Lady who, after showing the vision of Hell to Lúcia dos Santos, Jacinta, and Francisco Marto, revealed the \"Secret\" to them. Sister Lúcia recounted that Our Lady stated: \"...to save souls, God wants to establish devotion to My Immaculate Heart in the world\" (from the Memoirs of Sister Lúcia).
The sole purpose of this devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is, therefore, the salvation of souls and the attainment of peace. \"If you do what I tell you, many souls will be saved and you will have peace. The war will end\" (from the Memoirs of Sister Lúcia). With these words, Our Lady was quite clear about her request; it is for the sake of souls that all of her message is intended. This is also the mission of the Holy Church, as Saint John Bosco said, \"Give me souls, and keep the rest.\" The salvation of souls and of all humanity is the ultimate goal of the Church's mission on earth. \"God wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth\" (1 Timothy 2:3-4).
Catholics believe that the salvation of all humanity is only possible because Mary said yes to God. Since God decided that the Savior would come through Mary, it is also through her that we must be saved. Saved through her and not by her, as Catholics believe that only Jesus Christ is the Savior and Mary, His Most Holy Mother, is the co-redemptrix with her Son Jesus. She collaborates with Him in the plan of salvation. \"God wants to establish devotion to My Immaculate Heart in the world\" (from the Memoirs of Sister Lúcia).
God established an effective means to save the souls of His children and thus restore peace to the world. I repeat, Jesus is who saves! But the means through which God became man and dwelled among us was Mary! She is the mediator between us and Jesus Christ, a role that in no way diminishes the dignity of Jesus Christ as the one and only Lord and Savior, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. However, what we cannot do on our own due to our sinful nature—drawing closer to Jesus—is made possible through her, because through her, God has accomplished and continues to accomplish great works. \"The Lord has done great things for me...\" (Luke 1:49). And precisely because she is God's servant, humble, and beloved, all generations will proclaim her blessed. \"Mary is the safest, easiest, fastest, and most perfect means of reaching Jesus Christ.\" (Saint Louis Marie Grignion de Montfort).
It is fitting that God chose the Immaculate Heart of Mary, without stain or sin, so that just as salvation for the world came through her in the person of Jesus Christ, it is also through her that we men and women will be saved. Our Lady affirms: \"If you do what I tell you, many souls will be saved and you will have peace.\" (from the Memoirs of Sister Lúcia) This constitutes the second part of what is called the \"Secret,\" which was revealed gradually.
We will now see that the Great Secret is distinctly divided into three parts, with the first part being almost an instantaneous revelation, which is the terrible scene of the vision of Hell. The second and third parts of the Great Secret were revealed almost drop by drop, as Our Lady herself asked the three shepherd children to keep it secret. \"Do not tell anyone this. You may tell Francisco.\"
