sandalwood japamala bracelet

\n

The sandalwood japamala bracelet consists of 27 beads (+ 1 sumero) made from sandalwood, which when multiplied by 4 totals the symbolic number of 108 beads, a standard in japamalas. Sandalwood is widely used in japamalas because it is sacred in India and has calming and anti-stress properties.

ABOUT THE JAPAMALA

\n

The japamala or mala (Sanskrit: माला; mālā, meaning garland) is a series of beads, typically composed of 108 beads, used by Hindus and Buddhists to count while reciting, singing, or mentally repeating mantras, similar to rosaries. This practice is known in Sanskrit as Japá.

\n

The number holds particular significance both physically and spiritually for Hinduism and Buddhism. Sometimes, some malas include 4 markers called chaturmaharaja, which are different and often symbolic beads. The 109th bead is called sumeru (central mountain in Buddhist cosmology), bindu (point of creation), stupa (dome that houses relics), or guru bead (master). This bead is never counted but indicates the beginning or end of a count.

about sandalwood

\n

Sandalwood is a tree that grows in southern India. Its precious oil is extracted from the center of the trunk and is purest if the tree is less than 60 years old. The wood is ground into powder and then distilled to make oil used in soaps, cosmetics, candles, medicines, perfumes, and incense. The outer part of the wood is used to make beads or carved into statues of deities.
