About Selenite

Selenite is a variety of gypsum, often found and formed into natural rods or towers. It is a lightweight, slightly flexible stone with low hardness that can be easily scratched by a fingernail. Etymologically, the word selenite comes from Greek, meaning a moonstone due to its color and transparency (Selena was the name of the Greek goddess of the Moon). Like other varieties of gypsum, such as selenite and alabaster, selenite is a hydrated calcium sulfate compound.
