Desert Sage (Artemisia Tridentata) covers a large part of the high desert and valleys of the western United States.

This aromatic shrub thrives in the wind-exposed deserts around Santa Fe/Taos. It has thin, branched leaves and a light brown color.

Desert Sage has a warm herbal scent that is slightly spicy (think bay leaves or mint tea).

It is used for cleansing and purification, protection, and inner strength. It is said to bring pleasant thoughts and relieve headaches and anxiety.

You can burn the Desert Sage torch during meditations before readings or other forms of divination, and before, during, and after rituals.

In addition to being burned, Desert Sage is often kept, used or stored with sacred objects to protect them from negative influences.

Native American tradition holds that, wherever this type of sage is present, evil spirits cannot enter. The Desert Sage torch is used to protect sacred objects like peace pipes or peyote wands (feathers) from negative energies.The sacred pipe in the Sioux nation is kept in a bundle with branches of Desert Sage.

Leaves containing camphor are also used medicinally for coughs, colds, headaches, stomach aches, fevers, and to relieve pain during childbirth.

About Desert Sage

This sage grows in the arid western deserts.Desert Sage grows at altitudes between 3,000 and 10,000 feet above sea level.It is also known by its official title, Artemisia Tridentata.Artemisia (ar-tay-MIS-ee-a) comes from Artemis, the Greek virgin goddess of nature, hunting, and the desert.Tridentata (tri-den-TAH-ta) means “three teeth,” referring to the three lobes at the tips of the sage leaves.

The large Desert Sage often grows in habitats like cold snow-covered elevations in central and southern Utah among juniper or pine trees.This plant is extremely resilient and can grow with little water in sandy conditions with temperatures above 110 degrees, surviving harsh winters and deep snow at -28 degrees Celsius. This speaks volumes about this plant and all the energy released when burning a Desert Sage torch.
