The tarot – Book of Thoth by Eteilla is a reproduction from the 19th century based on the tarot created by Etteilla, the first to design a tarot deck for divinatory purposes. This tarot is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating and mysterious historical tarot decks. The author claimed upon its publication in Paris and Amsterdam (between 1783 and 1787) that this tarot game was a direct legacy of the Book of Thoth, a magical work from Ancient Egypt rediscovered thanks to these cards.

The tarot – Book of Thoth by Etteilla consists of a deck of 78 cards and a booklet of instructions in English, Spanish, Italian, French, and German. The cards measure 6.6 cm in width by 12.00 cm in length.

ABOUT ETTEILLA

Jean François Alliette, better known by his pseudonym Etteilla, was a significant figure in the development of modern tarot. At the end of the 18th century, the author published the first known book focusing on the use of tarot as a divinatory tool, subsequently creating the first tarot deck for occult and divination purposes.

Today, few cards from the original deck are known; only versions based on the original deck by his students have survived. One of these decks, likely the most well-known, published in 1870 is the “Grand Jeu de Oracle des Dames” (also known as Eteilla III). This deck was reproduced by the publisher Lo Scarabeo as Book of Thoth Etteilla Tarot.
