The name heliotrope refers to ancient times when some polished stones were considered reflections of the Sun; the appearance of the stone may remind one of a red sunset reflecting on a dark green ocean (heliotrope – tropical sun). Today, in India, this stone (ground into powder) is used as an ingredient in medicine or as an aphrodisiac.
